How to Activate HD Matrix, Laser or Digital Matrix Headlights on a US Audi A8 or S8 (D5, 2019–2026)
Check my Audi in the activation suite
Short answer: if your 2019–2026 US or Canadian Audi A8 or S8 has Matrix headlights, the adaptive high beam is built in but switched off in the North American software. It is enabled with a remote software session — no parts, no dealer, about 30 minutes — for $499.95 If your car has the standard (non-Matrix) LED headlights, there is nothing to activate; the hardware is not there.
1. First, find out which headlights your car has
This is the step most people skip, and it decides everything.
Every North American D5 A8 and S8 has Matrix hardware of some kind; the question is which generation:
- HD Matrix LED (2019–2021 A8, most S8) – individually switchable LED segments for the high beam.
- HD Matrix LED with Audi laser light (2019–2021 Prestige and S8 with the laser option) – Matrix plus a laser long-range module, with a small blue accent in the headlight. Both the Matrix beam and the European laser function can be activated.
- Digital Matrix LED (2022+ facelift A8/S8) – the DMD micro-mirror headlight. Matrix high beam, ECE functions and the "highway light carpet" projection can all be activated.
The window sticker names the type ("HD Matrix-design LED", "…with Audi laser light", or "Digital Matrix LED").
How to check without tools:
- Window sticker or build sheet. Audi USA prints the headlight type on the Monroney sticker; a VIN decoder from Audi or a dealer parts desk shows the same line.
- Look at the headlight. Matrix units have a wide, flat array of small LEDs across the upper part of the housing for the high beam; standard units have one or two round projectors. Laser cars add a small blue-tinted module.
- Ask us. Send your VIN through the contact page or enter your year, model and headlight type in the Audi Feature Activation Suite – it only shows what your exact car can have.
2. Why it's switched off on US cars
Adaptive driving beam (glare-free high beam) was not permitted under US lighting rules (FMVSS 108) until NHTSA approved it in 2022. Audi fitted the same Matrix hardware to North American cars but left the function disabled in the software. The headlights, camera and control modules are all there; only the configuration is missing. That is why this is a software activation and not a retrofit.
NHTSA approved adaptive driving beam headlights in 2022. State and local rules can vary, so check your local regulations. The hardware in your car was approved for North America when it was built; only the function was left switched off.
3. What "activation" actually involves
It is not a menu setting and it is not a simple coding toggle in OBDeleven or VCDS. The headlight control modules need the European parameter set loaded with genuine Audi software, then the system is calibrated so the camera and the segments agree on where other cars are. Done remotely, the process is:
- Order through the suite. Pick year, model and headlight type; the suite shows the activation, the price and any add-ons your car supports. Enter your VIN at checkout so we can confirm compatibility before the session.
- Get the cable. You need a DoIP cable and USB-Ethernet adapter ($39.95, yours to keep) and a Windows laptop with internet in the car. Standard OBDeleven, VCDS or Carista interfaces cannot be used for this.
- Book a session. Pick a time on the scheduling page. A technician connects to your laptop, loads the Audi software and runs the calibration. Plan on about 30 minutes.
- Drive at night with high beams on. The car now keeps the high beam up and masks only the segments pointing at other traffic. Nothing else about the car changes.
4. What you get on the D5 A8/S8 (and what it costs)
| Function | Which cars | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Matrix adaptive high beam (the main activation) | All D5 A8/S8, 2019–2026 | $499.95 |
| European blue laser function | Laser-equipped cars | $74.95 |
| Highway light carpet (lane-marking projection) | Digital Matrix cars | $74.95 |
| ECE headlight functionality | Digital Matrix cars | $49.95 |
| Separate brake light and turn signal in the OLED taillight | All D5 | $49.95 |
| Maneuver Assist (parking collision assist) | 2019–2023; most 2024+ cars already have it | $99.95 |
| Adaptive air suspension lowering | All D5 | $149.95 |
| Orange side-marker deactivation, single-sided parking light, crossing light, maneuver light, lap timer, acceleration measurement | Where the car supports them | Free with any activation |
| DoIP cable and USB-Ethernet adapter | If you don't already have one | $39.95 |
For comparison, A8/S8 Matrix activation is $699 plus a $300 interface at Europrice and $699 at NPG Technology; neither offers the OLED taillight function or suspension lowering.
5. Is it reversible, and what if a dealer resets it?
It is a software activation of hardware your car already has – no parts are changed. It can be reverted on request. If a dealer visit or update wipes a feature we activated, we re-activate it free of charge for as long as you own the car.
6. Can I do it myself with OBDeleven or VCDS?
Not on the D5. The Matrix and Digital Matrix functions need a full parameter load with genuine Audi software and a calibration pass that basic coding tools do not perform. People who try usually end up with error lights or a headlight that behaves worse than before. The activation is priced to be cheaper than the time it takes to find that out.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take? About 30 minutes on a remote session; booking slots are usually available within a few days.
Do I need to bring the car anywhere? No. It is done remotely anywhere in the US or Canada. You need the cable, a Windows laptop and an internet connection in the car.
What if my car turns out to be incompatible? The activation is refunded in full. Entering your VIN at checkout means we check first.
Will it affect my warranty? Any modification can be used by a manufacturer to deny a related claim. Our activations use stock VW/Audi files from other markets, do not increment the modules' flash counters, and appear as coding changes; how a dealer treats them is at the dealer's discretion.
Does it work on the newest model years? Yes – Matrix activation on the D5 is unaffected by SFD2 through 2026.
Which other Audis can be activated? The same service exists for the A6/A7/S6/S7/RS 6/RS 7 (C8), A3/S3/RS 3 (8Y), A4/A5/S4/S5/RS 5 (B9.5), A8/S8 (D5), Q7/Q8/SQ7/SQ8/RS Q8 (4M), Q5/SQ5 and the e-tron family. Each has its own guide in the Guides section, or use the suite.
