How to Activate Matrix LED Headlights on a US Audi A6, A7, S6, S7, RS 6 or RS 7 (C8, 2019–2026)
Check my Audi in the activation suite
Short answer: if your 2019–2026 US or Canadian Audi A6, A7, S6, S7, RS 6 or RS 7 has Matrix, HD Matrix or Matrix-with-laser headlights, the adaptive high beam is built in but switched off in the North American software. It is enabled with a remote software session — no parts, no dealer, about 30 minutes — for $499.95. If your car has the standard (non-Matrix) LED headlights, there is nothing to activate; the hardware is not there.
1. First, find out which headlights your car has
This is the step most people skip, and it decides everything. The C8 A6/A7 family shipped in North America with three headlight types:
- Standard LED (most Premium and some Premium Plus cars) – a single LED projector. No Matrix hardware. Activation is not possible; this would need a headlight retrofit, which is a different job.
- Matrix / HD Matrix LED (Premium Plus with the lighting package, most Prestige) – a block of individually switchable LED segments for the high beam. This is the hardware the activation unlocks.
- HD Matrix LED with Audi laser light (RS 6, RS 7, some S6/S7 and A7 Prestige) – Matrix plus a laser long-range module, recognisable by the small blue accent inside the headlight. Both the Matrix beam and the European laser function can be activated.
How to check without tools:
- Window sticker or build sheet. Look for "HD Matrix-design LED headlights" (or "…with Audi laser light"). Audi USA prints the headlight type on the Monroney sticker; a VIN decoder from Audi or a dealer parts desk will show the same line.
- Look at the headlight. Matrix units have a wide, flat array of small LEDs across the upper part of the housing for the high beam; standard units have one or two round projectors. Laser cars add a small blue-tinted module.
- Ask us. Send your VIN through the contact page or enter your year, model and headlight type in the Audi Feature Activation Suite – it only shows what your exact car can have.
2. Why it's switched off on US cars
Adaptive driving beam (glare-free high beam) was not permitted under US lighting rules (FMVSS 108) until NHTSA approved it in 2022. Audi fitted the same Matrix hardware to North American cars but left the function disabled in the software. The headlights, camera and control modules are all there; only the configuration is missing. That is why this is a software activation and not a retrofit.
NHTSA approved adaptive driving beam headlights in 2022. State and local rules can vary, so check your local regulations. The hardware in your car was approved for North America when it was built; only the function was left switched off.
3. What "activation" actually involves
It is not a menu setting and it is not a simple coding toggle in OBDeleven or VCDS. The headlight control modules need the European parameter set loaded with genuine Audi software, then the system is calibrated so the camera and the segments agree on where other cars are. Done remotely, the process is:
- Order through the suite. Pick year, model and headlight type; the suite shows the activation, the price and any add-ons your car supports. Enter your VIN at checkout so we can confirm compatibility before the session.
- Get the cable. You need a DoIP cable and USB-Ethernet adapter ($39.95, yours to keep) and a Windows laptop with internet in the car. Standard OBDeleven, VCDS or Carista interfaces cannot be used for this.
- Book a session. Pick a time on the scheduling page. A technician connects to your laptop, loads the Audi software and runs the calibration. Plan on about 30 minutes.
- Drive at night with high beams on. The car now keeps the high beam up and masks only the segments pointing at other traffic. Nothing else about the car changes.
4. What you get on a C8 (and what it costs)
| Function | Which cars | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Matrix adaptive high beam (the main activation) | All Matrix / HD Matrix / laser cars, 2019–2026 | $499.95 |
| European blue laser function | Laser-equipped RS 6, RS 7, S6/S7/A7 with laser | $74.95 |
| ECE headlight functionality (European low-beam pattern, cornering and tour/highway modes) | Matrix and HD Matrix cars | $49.95 |
| Maneuver Assist (parking collision assist) | 2019–2023; most 2024+ cars already have it | $99.95 |
| Adaptive air suspension lowering | Air-suspension cars | $149.95 |
| RS / S-style taillight animation | 2019–2026 (2024+ needs an SFD2 step, +$100) | $74.95 |
| Orange side-marker deactivation, single-sided parking light, crossing light with route data, maneuver light, lap timer, acceleration measurement | Where the car supports them | Free with any activation |
| DoIP cable and USB-Ethernet adapter | If you don't already have one | $39.95 |
For comparison, the same Matrix activation is $699 plus a $300 interface at Europrice and $699 at NPG Technology; neither offers the taillight animation, ECE functions or suspension lowering.
5. Is it reversible, and what if a dealer resets it?
It is a software activation of hardware your car already has – no parts are changed. It can be reverted on request. If a dealer visit or update wipes a feature we activated, we re-activate it free of charge for as long as you own the car.
6. Can I do it myself with OBDeleven or VCDS?
Not on the C8. Basic "long coding" tools can change a few lighting options, but the Matrix function needs a full parameter load and a calibration pass that those tools do not perform, and the 2024+ cars add Audi's SFD2 security on top. People who try usually end up with error lights or a headlight that behaves worse than before. The activation is priced to be cheaper than the time it takes to find that out.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take? About 30 minutes on a remote session; booking slots are usually available within a few days.
Do I need to bring the car anywhere? No. It is done remotely anywhere in the US or Canada. You need the DoIP cable, a Windows laptop and an internet connection in the car.
What if my car turns out to be incompatible? The activation is refunded in full. Entering your VIN at checkout means we check first.
Will it affect my warranty? Any modification can be used by a manufacturer to deny a related claim. Our activations use stock Audi files from other markets, do not increment the modules' flash counters, and appear as coding changes; how a dealer treats them is at the dealer's discretion.
Does it work on the 2024–2026 cars? Yes – Matrix activation on the C8 is unaffected by SFD2. Only the taillight animation on 2024+ cars needs the extra SFD2 step.
Which other Audis can be activated? The same service exists for the A4/A5/S4/S5/RS 5 (B9/B9.5), A3/S3/RS 3 (8Y), A8/S8 (D5), Q7/Q8/SQ7/SQ8/RS Q8 (4M), Q5/SQ5 and the e-tron family. Each has its own guide, or use the suite.
