How to Activate Matrix LED Headlights on a US Audi A3, S3 or RS 3 (8Y, 2022–2026)
Check my Audi in the activation suite
Short answer: if your 2022–2026 US or Canadian Audi A3, S3 or RS 3 has Matrix headlights, the adaptive high beam is built in but switched off in the North American software. It is enabled with a remote software session — no parts, no dealer, about 30 minutes — for $399.95 – the 8Y package is $100 less than the larger Audis. If your car has the standard (non-Matrix) LED headlights, there is nothing to activate; the hardware is not there.
1. First, find out which headlights your car has
This is the step most people skip, and it decides everything.
- Standard LED (A3 and S3 Premium / Premium Plus without the lighting package) – a single projector. No Matrix hardware; activation is not possible.
- Matrix LED (S3 Prestige, RS 3, A3/S3 with the Matrix lighting package) – a block of individually switchable LED segments behind the high beam. This is what the activation unlocks. On the 8Y, Audi USA lists it as "Matrix-design LED headlights" on the window sticker.
The 8Y does not come with laser headlights in North America, so there is no laser function to add on this platform.
How to check without tools:
- Window sticker or build sheet. Audi USA prints the headlight type on the Monroney sticker; a VIN decoder from Audi or a dealer parts desk shows the same line.
- Look at the headlight. Matrix units have a wide, flat array of small LEDs across the upper part of the housing for the high beam; standard units have one or two round projectors. Laser cars add a small blue-tinted module.
- Ask us. Send your VIN through the contact page or enter your year, model and headlight type in the Audi Feature Activation Suite – it only shows what your exact car can have.
2. Why it's switched off on US cars
Adaptive driving beam (glare-free high beam) was not permitted under US lighting rules (FMVSS 108) until NHTSA approved it in 2022. Audi fitted the same Matrix hardware to North American cars but left the function disabled in the software. The headlights, camera and control modules are all there; only the configuration is missing. That is why this is a software activation and not a retrofit.
NHTSA approved adaptive driving beam headlights in 2022. State and local rules can vary, so check your local regulations. The hardware in your car was approved for North America when it was built; only the function was left switched off.
3. What "activation" actually involves
It is not a menu setting and it is not a simple coding toggle in OBDeleven or VCDS. The headlight control modules need the European parameter set loaded with genuine Audi software, then the system is calibrated so the camera and the segments agree on where other cars are. Done remotely, the process is:
- Order through the suite. Pick year, model and headlight type; the suite shows the activation, the price and any add-ons your car supports. Enter your VIN at checkout so we can confirm compatibility before the session.
- Get the cable. On 2022–2024 cars the activation needs a VAS 5054 interface ($150, sold outright) rather than the DoIP cable; 2025 and 2026 cars use the DoIP cable and USB-Ethernet adapter ($39.95, yours to keep). The suite shows the right one for your year. Standard OBDeleven, VCDS or Carista interfaces cannot be used for this.
- Book a session. Pick a time on the scheduling page. A technician connects to your laptop, loads the Audi software and runs the calibration. Plan on about 30 minutes.
- Drive at night with high beams on. The car now keeps the high beam up and masks only the segments pointing at other traffic. Nothing else about the car changes.
4. What you get on the 8Y A3/S3/RS 3 (and what it costs)
| Function | Which cars | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Matrix adaptive high beam (the main activation) | All Matrix-equipped A3, S3, RS 3, 2022–2026 | $399.95 |
| SFD2 security step for 2026 cars | 2026 A3/S3/RS 3 only | +$100 |
| ECE headlight functionality (European low-beam pattern and cornering behaviour) | 2022–2024 Matrix cars | $49.95 |
| RS-style taillight animation | A3 and S3, 2022–2026 (2024+ needs an SFD2 step, +$100) | $74.95 |
| Orange side-marker deactivation, single-sided parking light, lap timer, acceleration measurement | Where the car supports them | Free with any activation |
| VAS 5054 interface (2022–2024) / DoIP cable and adapter (2025–2026) | If you don't already have one | $150 / $39.95 |
For comparison, 8Y Matrix activation is $499 plus a $300 interface at Europrice (and $1,300 extra on 2026 cars), and $699 plus a $250 SFD2 surcharge at NPG Technology.
5. Is it reversible, and what if a dealer resets it?
It is a software activation of hardware your car already has – no parts are changed. It can be reverted on request. If a dealer visit or update wipes a feature we activated, we re-activate it free of charge for as long as you own the car.
6. Can I do it myself with OBDeleven or VCDS?
Not on the 8Y. The Matrix function needs a full parameter load with genuine Audi software and a calibration pass that basic coding tools do not perform, and the 2026 cars add SFD2 security on top. People who try usually end up with error lights or a headlight that behaves worse than before. The activation is priced to be cheaper than the time it takes to find that out.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take? About 30 minutes on a remote session; booking slots are usually available within a few days.
Do I need to bring the car anywhere? No. It is done remotely anywhere in the US or Canada. You need the cable, a Windows laptop and an internet connection in the car.
What if my car turns out to be incompatible? The activation is refunded in full. Entering your VIN at checkout means we check first.
Will it affect my warranty? Any modification can be used by a manufacturer to deny a related claim. Our activations use stock VW/Audi files from other markets, do not increment the modules' flash counters, and appear as coding changes; how a dealer treats them is at the dealer's discretion.
Does it work on the newest model years? Yes. 2024 and 2025 cars activate normally. 2026 cars have Audi's SFD2 security on the relevant module, which adds one extra step and $100; it is included in the suite price for 2026 and does not need a special build date.
Which other Audis can be activated? The same service exists for the A6/A7/S6/S7/RS 6/RS 7 (C8), A3/S3/RS 3 (8Y), A4/A5/S4/S5/RS 5 (B9.5), A8/S8 (D5), Q7/Q8/SQ7/SQ8/RS Q8 (4M), Q5/SQ5 and the e-tron family. Each has its own guide in the Guides section, or use the suite.
